GRIMMA - Pearl of the Mulde Valley in the Heart of Saxony

Deutsch Englisch Französisch Polnisch Tschechisch
Grimma is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Old-established residents of Saxony know that less than 20 km south-east of Leipzig there is a little paradise: Grimma. The place where the gentle hills alongside the River Mulde open into a wonderful meadowed valley has always invited people to take their abode. For where would life be more pleasant than amidst cultural monuments and protected landscapes?

Probing into the 800-year-old history of Grimma you will find amazing things. For example, Grimma is the birthplace of Albrecht der Beherzte, the ancestor of the Saxon royal family. Katharina von Bora, the wife of the reformer Martin Luther, lived behind the mighty walls of Nimbschen nunnery until she made a spectacular escape with his help. In 1797 Georg Joachim Göschen, the famous publisher of works of classical German literature, e.g. by Lessing, Goethe and Schiller, relocated his printing shop from Leipzig to Grimma on the River Mulde, where his friend, Johann Gottfried Seume, joined him as a proof-reader. What is more, Göschen's summer house in Grimma saw frequent visits by the greats of classical German literature such as Friedrich Schiller and Christian Gottfried Körner. The house is now a museum where visitors from all over the world meet.

In recent history, the little town on the river Mulde has won a reputation as the town with the most beautiful old centre in Central Germany. It boasts 26 magnificent buildings from five stylistic periods, including the famous town hall with the prominent Renaissance gable, protected by the well-preserved town wall which is over 400 metres long, lined by delicate little houses, and offers an outstanding view of the river Mulde and its romantic riverside. During excursions through the town, visitors will find old churches such as the Frauenkirche and the Klosterkirche (monastery church), the feudal castle and the mediaeval Nimbschen nunnery, the Gymnasium St. Augustin school as well as the floating water mill. The rooms of these cultural monuments house museums, galleries, and exhibitions. The Denkmalschmiede Höfgen and the Kaditzsch Studio Gallery have become places for innovative sculptures, experimental art and modern art festivals.

No tour of the old town would be complete without the riverbank of the Mulde and the 80-m-long suspension bridge of Grimma, the longest cable stay bridge in Saxony. Further up the river valley there are mills and the ruins of Nimbschen nunnery. Leading past Grimma Palace, Gattersburg Castle and spacious estates with the typical wall houses, a network of walking and cycling paths extends right into the wonderful landscape of the River Mulde.

Don't you feel like getting to the bottom of the mystery of Grimma, which was chosen as the most beautiful town in Central Germany?

Convent Nimbschen and the "Cinderella of the Reformation"

Authentic sites of associated with Luther´s life are to be found in Saxony, e.g in Grimma, the city on the River Mulde where Luther preached on several occasions in the church of the Augustininan priory. Before Katharina von Bora became Luther´s wife she was a nun in the Marienthron Convent in Nimbschen., about one km to the south of Grimma. Luther´s ideas of the reform had penetrated the thick walls of the convents and Katharina came to realise the truth of what she termed the "uselessness of being imprisoned" in a convent. In 1523 she managed to flee in spectacular fashion to Wittenberg where she married Martin Luther two years later. Today the stone ruins convent, together with an exhibition which is display in the local museum in Grimma, still stand as silent witness to the romantic story of this "Cinderella of the Reformation".
